I Staked $1,000 Across 5 Platforms for 30 Days — Here Are My Actual Returns (And Mistakes)

30-day staking experiment results: $1,000 split across Lido, Aave V3, Binance Earn, EigenLayer, and Coinbase earned $2.27 net after gas fees — approximately 2.7% annualized. Binance Earn had the best net return ($0.66, zero gas), while EigenLayer had the highest gross yield ($0.90) but highest gas costs. All APY figures are as of March 2026 and fluctuate based on network conditions.

March started rough. ETH was trading around $1,800 after getting beaten down from its $4,831 peak in late 2025. Everyone had an opinion about which staking platform paid the most. Nobody had actually run the numbers in current conditions.

So I did.

$1,000. Five platforms. Thirty days. Every fee documented. Every dollar tracked.

This is the first entry in the PassiveYieldLab Experiments series — real tests with real money, published with real numbers. Not estimates. Not projections. What actually happened.


The Setup

Start date: March 1, 2026 End date: March 31, 2026 Capital: $1,000 USD Allocation: $200 per platform (equal weighting)

I chose platforms that represent the four main staking categories:

One note on Aave: I deployed USDC rather than ETH because supply rates on stablecoins vary independently from ETH staking yields. This gave me one stablecoin data point against four ETH-denominated positions.


Platform-by-Platform Results

1. Lido — stETH Liquid Staking

Advertised APR (March 2026): 2.5% My 30-day yield: $0.41 Gas paid: $0.09 Net: $0.32

Lido was the smoothest experience of the five. Swap ETH for stETH, done. Rewards accrue automatically as the stETH balance rebase. The 2.5% APR feels low compared to a year ago, but it reflects reality: as more validators entered the network, consensus-layer yields compressed. Lido takes a 10% fee on rewards, which is already baked into the advertised rate.

The $0.09 gas fee surprised me. In March 2026, Ethereum mainnet gas is genuinely near-zero by historical standards — Etherscan showed averages around 0.2-0.5 Gwei most of the month. Eighteen months ago, this same transaction would have cost $8-15.

2. Aave V3 — USDC Supply

Advertised Supply APY (March 2026): ~4.5% (variable) My 30-day yield: $0.74 Gas paid: $0.28 (USDC swap + supply, two transactions) Net: $0.46

Aave’s variable rate moved between 3.8% and 5.2% during the month, averaging around 4.5%. The $0.28 in gas covered two transactions: swapping ETH to USDC on-chain, then depositing into Aave V3. That’s cheap by any historical standard.

What I didn’t account for: the USDC swap itself carried ~0.05% slippage. Not painful at $200, but it’s a real cost that doesn’t show up in APY calculators.

The honest read on Aave: it’s not exciting. But 4.5% on a stablecoin, deployed in a protocol with $15+ billion in TVL and a multi-year security track record, is a different risk profile than chasing 20% yields on a six-month-old protocol. Sometimes boring is the point.


3. Binance Earn — Flexible ETH Staking

Advertised APY (March 2026): 4.0% My 30-day yield: $0.66 Gas paid: $0.00 (CEX, no gas) Net: $0.66

Binance Earn was the most frictionless option. No wallet, no gas, no approvals. I deposited ETH, toggled flexible staking on, and rewards showed up daily in tiny increments.

The yield is slightly higher than Lido’s (4.0% vs 2.5%) because Binance runs a mixed pool that includes some locked staking positions blended in. The trade-off is custodial risk — your ETH lives on Binance’s books, not in your wallet.

4. EigenLayer — Restaked ETH

Advertised APY (March 2026): ~5.5% (varies by AVS selection) My 30-day yield: $0.90 Gas paid: $0.38 (three transactions: deposit LST, delegate operator, confirm restaking) Net: $0.52

EigenLayer paid the highest yield of the five. It also required the most setup steps — three separate transactions to deposit a liquid staking token, delegate to a validator operator, and confirm the restaking position. At $0.38 total gas in March 2026, that complexity is much less painful than it would have been in 2024.

The restaking yield comes in two layers: underlying ETH staking rewards (~2.5% from the LST) plus AVS rewards from the services your operator secures. My operator selection returned roughly 3% additional APY in EIGEN tokens, bringing the effective rate to ~5.5%.

One mistake I made: I selected an operator without checking their slashing history first. This was sloppy. Slashing risk is real in EigenLayer — if your operator misbehaves on an AVS network, you can lose staked ETH. I got lucky this month, but I should have spent 10 minutes reading the operator’s on-chain track record before delegating. Don’t skip that step.

5. Coinbase — ETH Staking

Advertised Reward Rate (March 2026): 1.91% My 30-day yield: $0.31 Gas paid: $0.00 (CEX) Net: $0.31

Coinbase paid the least. The 1.91% reward rate is already net of Coinbase’s 25% commission cut — meaning the underlying staking yield is closer to 2.55%, and Coinbase pockets 25% of it. That’s a significant haircut compared to Lido’s 10% fee.

I included Coinbase because it’s the default option for millions of U.S. retail investors. If you have ETH sitting on Coinbase already, 1.91% beats 0%. But if you’re willing to take one extra step and move ETH to a self-custody wallet, Lido pays 31% more yield on the same ETH.

Total net yield for the month: $2.27 on $1,000. Annualized, that’s roughly $27.24/year or 2.7% net APY across the blended portfolio.


What I Didn’t Account For

ETH Price Moved

Between March 1 and March 31, ETH went from approximately $1,800 to $2,071. My four ETH positions collectively appreciated ~$184 in USD value — which completely dwarfs the $2.27 in staking yield.

This is something every yield calculator ignores: the underlying asset can move more in a week than your staking rewards move in a year. The $2.27 yield is what you earned regardless of ETH price. The $184 appreciation is a separate bet on ETH itself.

When I tell people I made $2.27 in yield last month, the response is usually “that’s nothing.” When I tell them my ETH positions also appreciated $184, the response changes. Both are true. They’re different things.

Tax Complexity

Staking rewards are taxable income in most jurisdictions when received. My $3.02 in gross rewards is taxable at ordinary income rates in the U.S. — not capital gains rates. That’s worth knowing before you calculate your real net return. For tracking, I use CoinLedger to keep my crypto tax records clean.

Opportunity Cost

$1,000 earning 2.7% net APY is the comparison point against alternatives: high-yield savings accounts at ~4.5%, money market funds, dividend ETFs. Staking at these yields doesn’t obviously win on yield alone. The case for crypto staking is partly the yield, partly the ecosystem access, partly the long-term ETH thesis.


Mistakes Made

Mistake #1: Didn’t verify the EigenLayer operator’s slashing history. Cost: Nothing this month. Potential cost: up to 100% of the staked position. Lesson: always check on-chain operator history before delegating. Takes 10 minutes.

Mistake #2: Forgot to account for Coinbase’s 25% commission when comparing yields. I initially included Coinbase thinking it would be comparable to Lido. The advertised 1.91% is net of their cut. If you’re comparing gross yields, Lido’s 2.5% (net of 10% fee) is a better starting point.

Mistake #3: Paid two gas transactions for Aave when one optimized route would have done it. If I’d used a DEX aggregator that auto-swaps and deposits in a single transaction, I’d have saved ~$0.12. Tiny, but the principle matters: always check if there’s a one-step route before doing two-step transactions.


Ranked by Net Efficiency

For $200 deployed with minimal effort:

  1. Binance Earn — $0.66 net, zero gas, easiest setup. Best for beginners.
  2. EigenLayer — $0.52 net, highest gross yield, but 3-transaction setup and slashing risk.
  3. Aave — $0.46 net, stablecoin exposure removes ETH price volatility.
  4. Lido — $0.32 net, DeFi’s benchmark, lowest fee structure, liquid token.
  5. Coinbase — $0.31 net, slowest, highest commission, but zero friction for existing Coinbase users.

What I Would Do Differently

With $1,000 to deploy today, my allocation would shift:


Risk Section

Smart contract risk: Lido, Aave, and EigenLayer are smart contracts. Despite audits and long track records, bugs can result in loss of funds.

Slashing risk (EigenLayer): If your delegated operator misbehaves on an Actively Validated Service (AVS), your staked ETH can be partially or fully slashed. This is not hypothetical — it is a designed feature of the protocol.

APY fluctuates: All rates shown are as of March 2026. Staking APY changes daily based on network participation, utilization rates, and market conditions. What I earned is not what you will earn.

Custodial risk (Binance, Coinbase): Funds on centralized platforms are not in your custody. Exchange insolvency, regulatory action, or security breaches can affect your ability to withdraw.

Tax liability: Staking rewards are generally treated as taxable income when received. Consult a tax professional in your jurisdiction.

The One Number That Matters

Over 30 days, $1,000 across five platforms earned me $2.27 in net yield.

That’s not a life-changing number. It’s also not supposed to be. Staking at these scales is practice — learning the mechanics, understanding the fee structures, finding out which platforms actually behave the way they claim to.

The valuable part of this experiment isn’t the $2.27. It’s knowing that EigenLayer’s operator selection actually matters, that Coinbase’s commission structure quietly bleeds 31% more yield than Lido, that gas in March 2026 is almost free, and that the underlying ETH price volatility ($184 in one month) will always dwarf any yield you earn at these APY levels.

Run the same experiment with $10,000 and the yield matters more. Run it with $100,000 and you have a real income stream. The math scales linearly. The mechanics don’t change.
