This is the slowest part and the most important part.
I started a weekly newsletter on passive income and crypto yield using Beehiiv. The setup took a weekend. The grind was the 90 days after that.
The first 1,000 subscribers came from:
- Cross-promoting in two Reddit communities (r/passive_income, r/beehiiv)
- One swap with a similar-sized creator I found on Twitter/X

Once the newsletter was generating $400+/month and I had an audience, I added a content layer.
This means semi-automated long-form articles and voiceover videos. The workflow I use:
- Newsletter data tells me what topics get the best open rates

Layer 3: AI Agent Services
This is the layer that pushed me past $3K/month, and it’s more straightforward than it sounds.
By the time I’d built Layers 1 and 2, I had:
- A track record (my newsletter was proof I knew the space)
- Systems that worked (my content automation was live and producing)
- Inbound inquiries (3-4 people/month asking if I could help them set something similar up)
I started taking on 2-3 clients per month at $500-800 each. The scope: build them a newsletter-to-content pipeline similar to mine, using Claude API for content drafting, Beehiiv for the newsletter, and a simple Zapier/Make workflow to connect everything.
Setup time per client: 8-12 hours, including the initial call, build, and handover documentation. Monthly maintenance (if they want it): 1-2 hours at $150-200/month.

The 90-Day Launch Roadmap
If you’re starting from zero, here’s the sequence that works:
Month 1: Foundation (weeks 1-4)
- Set up Beehiiv on the free plan (test it before paying)
- Pick one specific niche — passive income is broad, pick a corner of it
- Publish your first 4 newsletters, even if nobody’s reading
- Start documenting your own learning publicly (this is future content)
- Target: 100-200 subscribers
Month 2: Distribution (weeks 5-8)
- Run one growth campaign ($2-3/subscriber via Beehiiv Boosts)
- Set up your first affiliate link in the newsletter (one per issue, relevant, disclosed)
- Start writing 2 long-form posts using newsletter content as source material

What I’d Do Differently
The honest version:
I wasted 3 months trying to do all three layers simultaneously. Don’t. Build them sequentially. Layer 1 funds Layer 2. Layer 2 gives you the audience and content library that makes Layer 3 easier to sell.
I also underpriced my first clients significantly. The first one paid $200 for a setup I now charge $700 for. Raise your rates faster than feels comfortable.
And I spent too long on tool optimization. At month 2, I was testing five different newsletter platforms. At month 4, I was comparing four AI voiceover tools. Stop comparing. Pick one, use it until you hit $1K/month, then evaluate.
Risk Disclosure
This is real income but it’s not guaranteed income. Newsletter growth varies enormously by niche and execution quality. Affiliate commissions from crypto platforms like Binance depend on market conditions and user activity. AI voiceover costs and capabilities shift with platform pricing changes.
Platform risk is real: if Beehiiv changes its Boosts program or YouTube adjusts monetization thresholds, parts of this system can change overnight. Diversifying across layers is partly a hedge against exactly that.
