Lido v3 Guide: How ETH Stakers Can Now Customize Their Yield Strategy

I was checking my stETH position in Canggu last February when a notification popped up: “Lido v3 is live.”

Before v3, Lido worked one way: you deposit ETH, you get stETH, you earn ~3% APY. Done. No choices, no customization. You were pooled with everyone else and got the average outcome.

That’s fine for most people. It was fine for me for two years.

But Lido v2 had a real problem: one-size-fits-all staking doesn’t fit institutions. A family office in Singapore and a retail DeFi user in Canggu have completely different requirements around counterparty risk, compliance, and validator selection. Lido v2 couldn’t serve both well.

Enter v3’s core innovation: stVaults.

Launched on Ethereum mainnet January 30, 2026, stVaults separate validator selection from the liquidity layer. You still get stETH at the end — with all its DeFi composability — but now you can control:

The crypto Twitter reaction was immediate. A thread from a prominent DeFi researcher put it bluntly: “Lido just stopped competing with EigenLayer and started competing with AWS.” Divisive? Yes. But it captures the scale of what v3 is attempting — infrastructure for the entire Ethereum staking ecosystem, not just retail depositors like you and me.

stVaults: How Custom Yield Strategies Work {#stvaults}

Here’s where it gets interesting — and where regular ETH holders like us can actually benefit.

stVaults support two main advanced strategies beyond basic staking:

Looped Staking

You stake ETH → get stETH → deposit stETH into a lending market as collateral → borrow more ETH → stake again. Repeat.

The simple version: if you want more yield and are okay with more complexity and risk, EigenLayer restaking (especially via liquid restaking tokens) still offers higher headline APYs — 3.8–6% base, potentially 8–12% through protocols like Ether.fi.

If you want more control over your staking — who validates your ETH, what policies apply, how rewards compound — stVaults is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

For most retail ETH stakers, the choice is still plain stETH. Simple, liquid, battle-tested. v3 is genuinely exciting but the advanced strategies add risk that many people don’t need.


Step-by-Step: Setting Up a stVault Strategy {#step-by-step}

Right now (April 2026), retail stVault access is still rolling out. Here’s what the setup process looks like:

Step 1: Get Your ETH Ready

You’ll need ETH in a self-custody wallet. If you’re new to hardware wallets, a Ledger is what I use — keeps your keys safe while you’re interacting with smart contracts. Non-negotiable if you’re moving serious ETH.

For buying ETH, Binance has the deepest liquidity and lowest spreads I’ve found.

Step 2: Connect to Lido’s Interface

Go to stake.lido.fi — this is the official Lido interface. Connect your wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, or Ledger’s native connection).

For standard staking, it’s just: deposit ETH, receive stETH. One transaction.

Risks You Should Know About {#risks}

This isn’t a disclaimer I’m burying — it’s actually important.

Smart contract risk. Lido v3 is new code. It passed audits and ran on testnets, but “audited” is not “bulletproof.” The DeFi graveyard is full of audited protocols. Position sizing matters.

Slashing risk. If a node operator gets slashed (penalized by Ethereum’s consensus layer), your stETH loses value proportionally. Lido has insurance mechanisms, but they don’t cover 100% of losses.

Liquidation risk (looped strategies only). If ETH price drops significantly and you’re using stETH as collateral for borrowed ETH, you can get liquidated. I’ve seen people lose 30% of their position this way. Always know your liquidation price.

stETH de-peg risk. In extreme market conditions, stETH can trade below ETH. It recovered after previous episodes, but if you need to exit during a panic, you may sell at a discount.

Lido’s protocol fee. That 10% fee is taken from your staking rewards, not your principal. Still worth it for the liquidity and composability, but worth knowing.

My Take After Three Months {#my-take}

I’ve been running a small stVault position since February. Here’s my honest read:

For retail stakers: Plain stETH is still the right answer. The v3 features are powerful but they’re built for institutions and sophisticated DeFi users first. The looped staking strategies add risk most people don’t need when 3% APY on liquid ETH is already better than most savings accounts globally.

For DeFi power users: stVaults are genuinely exciting. Being able to customize validator selection and reward logic, while keeping stETH’s liquidity? That’s a meaningful upgrade. I’ve been comparing it with Rocket Pool and EigenLayer — all three have valid use cases depending on your priorities.

For institutions: This is the real target market. Compliance-compatible, segregated, auditable staking with on-demand stETH liquidity is something that previously didn’t exist in liquid staking.

Lido v3 isn’t trying to out-yield EigenLayer. It’s trying to become the infrastructure layer for institutional Ethereum staking while keeping its retail base happy with the same reliable stETH they already use.

That’s a smart play. And it’s why, even with the new complexity, I’m keeping most of my staking allocation in stETH rather than moving to pure EigenLayer restaking.

Passive income isn’t lazy money — it’s freedom money. But only if you don’t get liquidated at 3am.
