The EigenLayer Points System and EIGEN Token

One dimension of restaking that’s driven a lot of participation — honestly, maybe more than the base yield — is the points and token incentive layer.

EigenLayer ran multiple restaking campaigns where depositors earned “EigenLayer points,” which were later convertible to EIGEN tokens. The EIGEN token launched in 2024 and gave early restakers additional returns beyond the ETH yield. This pattern of points-to-token has become common across liquid restaking protocols as well.

As of early 2026, the initial airdrop phases are complete, but ongoing EIGEN staking and AVS reward emissions continue. The value of these rewards depends on EIGEN’s market price, which fluctuates like any token.

Honest answer: it’s a mix of both, and the proportion shifts over time.

In the early phases of EigenLayer (2024–2025), a significant portion of “restaking yield” came from EIGEN token distributions and LRT protocol points that converted to tokens. These were bootstrapping incentives — essentially, protocols paying users to participate early.

As the ecosystem matures in 2026 and beyond, the more sustainable component is actual fees paid by AVSs to restakers in exchange for the security they’re providing. AVSs like EigenDA charge fees from the rollups using their services, and a portion flows back to restakers.
