Last Tuesday morning in Canggu, I checked my phone before even making coffee.
Not for social media. Not for news. I was checking my stETH position on Aave — a habit I’d built after a rough Q4 2023 when I was too passive about a leveraged stablecoin position and got partially liquidated. Learned that one the hard way.
The screen showed my ETH effective yield sitting at 6.4%. Not from some sketchy yield aggregator with anonymous devs and no audit. Not from a protocol that launched three weeks ago. From two of the most battle-tested DeFi protocols in existence: Lido and Aave.
This is the strategy. I’ll explain exactly how it works, what the real numbers look like in April 2026, and where people get it wrong.
Why Plain ETH Staking Isn’t Enough
If you just stake ETH on Lido, you earn approximately 2.50% APY right now (as of April 1, 2026 — rates update every 10 minutes at lido.fi, they fluctuate).
That’s fine. It’s passive. It beats a bank savings account. But 2.5% on a $10,000 ETH position earns you $250 a year. Meanwhile, the same ETH sitting in this yield stack earns closer to $640 — with no additional capital required.
The difference is how you deploy your staked position. You’re not just staking. You’re using your stake as productive collateral.
Here’s the insight that makes this work: wstETH keeps appreciating against ETH at the staking rate regardless of where it sits. Whether it’s in your wallet, in Aave, or posted as collateral — the underlying staking rewards keep compounding. So when you borrow against it on Aave, you’re borrowing against an asset that’s continuously appreciating.
The Core Strategy: Two Layers of Yield
The stETH + Aave yield stack has two layers. You can run just Layer 1 if you want something simple. Layer 2 amplifies the returns but adds leverage risk.
Layer 1 — Lido Liquid Staking (2.5% APY)
You deposit ETH into Lido and receive wstETH (wrapped staked ETH). The “w” matters: while stETH rebases daily to reflect staking rewards, wstETH wraps those rewards into price appreciation instead. 1 wstETH = progressively more ETH over time.
Current rate: ~2.50% APY on wstETH (as of April 1, 2026, source: Lido.fi)
This is the base layer. Simple, battle-tested, liquid. Lido holds ~32% of all staked ETH and has been operating since 2020. If you’re holding ETH long-term anyway, not having it in Lido is leaving money on the table.
This is what I do, not financial advice — your situation may differ.
Layer 2 — Aave Prime Instance Leverage (adds ~3–5%)
Here’s where it gets interesting.
Aave V3 runs a dedicated “Prime” (formerly Lido) instance on Ethereum, specifically optimized for wstETH/WETH leveraged strategies. The loan-to-value ratio goes up to 95%, meaning you can borrow up to $950 for every $1,000 of wstETH you deposit.
The current wstETH borrow rate on Aave is approximately 0.06% variable (as of April 2026 via Aavescan). This is almost free money.
The math for a 2x leveraged position:
- Deposit 1 ETH worth of wstETH → earning 2.5%
- Borrow 0.9 ETH in WETH at 0.06%
- Stake that borrowed WETH on Lido → get more wstETH → deposit again
- Your net position: ~1.9 ETH earning 2.5% staking yield, minus 0.9 ETH at 0.06% borrowing cost
Net APY at 2x leverage: (1.9 × 2.5%) − (0.9 × 0.06%) = 4.75% − 0.054% ≈ 4.7% on your original ETH
At 3x leverage:
- ~2.8 ETH earning 2.5% staking yield, minus 1.8 ETH at 0.06%
- Net APY: (2.8 × 2.5%) − (1.8 × 0.06%) = 7.0% − 0.108% ≈ 6.9%
That’s your 6%+ without any protocol token incentives, without any liquidity provision risk, and without touching a stablecoin.
Rate disclaimer: All APY figures as of April 1, 2026. APY fluctuates constantly based on network conditions and Aave utilization. These are observed current rates, not guarantees. Always verify at lido.fi and app.aave.com before committing capital.
Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1: Get ETH onto Ethereum Mainnet
If you don’t have ETH yet, I use Binance or OKX to buy and then withdraw to my self-custody wallet. Gas fees on Ethereum have come down considerably in 2026 — a mainnet transaction typically costs $2–8 now.
You’ll need a self-custody wallet. MetaMask, Rabby, or hardware wallet (Ledger/Trezor) all work fine. Do not attempt this strategy from an exchange wallet — you need direct access to DeFi protocols.
Step 2: Stake ETH on Lido
Go to stake.lido.fi. Connect your wallet. Deposit ETH and receive wstETH. That’s it for the base layer.
Keep a small ETH reserve (0.01–0.02 ETH) in your wallet for gas fees. You’ll need it for subsequent transactions.
Pro tip: The Lido staking interface shows your real-time APR. It refreshes every 10 minutes based on validator performance. Bookmark it and check it occasionally — if it dips below 2%, something unusual may be happening with the validator set.
Step 3: Navigate to Aave’s Prime/Lido Instance
Go to app.aave.com. In the markets dropdown, look for the “Prime” or “Lido” instance on Ethereum mainnet. This is different from the standard Aave V3 Ethereum market.
The Prime instance is purpose-built for this exact strategy — it offers higher LTV ratios for wstETH and tailored interest rate curves for the WETH borrow market. Lower rates, higher limits.
Step 4: Supply wstETH as Collateral
Supply your wstETH to the Prime instance. Toggle the “use as collateral” switch. Your wstETH immediately starts earning Lido’s staking rewards in the background — depositing it into Aave doesn’t pause the staking yield.
The Prime instance’s wstETH LTV is 90–95% depending on current governance parameters. This means you can borrow up to 90–95 cents for every dollar of wstETH deposited.
What I do: I keep my health factor (Aave’s liquidation risk indicator) above 1.8. Never let it fall below 1.3. More on this in the risk section.
Step 5: Borrow WETH
In the borrow section, select WETH (wrapped ETH). Borrow at the variable rate — currently around 0.06%.
How much to borrow? This depends on your risk tolerance:
- Conservative (1.5x leverage): Borrow 30–40% of your collateral value. Health factor stays comfortably above 2.0.
- Moderate (2x leverage): Borrow ~50% of collateral. Health factor around 1.8–2.0.
- Aggressive (3x leverage): Borrow ~65–70% of collateral. Health factor around 1.35–1.5. Approaching danger zone.
I run at roughly 2x for most of this position. Sleeping better is worth the lower yield.
Step 6: Loop (Optional)
Unwrap the borrowed WETH back to ETH, stake it on Lido for more wstETH, and deposit that back into Aave. Repeat once or twice to reach your target leverage ratio.
Alternatively, Aave’s UI and third-party tools like DeFi Saver support one-click looping that automates this in a single transaction. It costs more in gas but saves significant manual work.
Layer 3 (Optional): EigenLayer Restaking Upgrade
Once you’re comfortable with the base Lido + Aave stack, there’s an additional yield layer available through EigenLayer restaking.
EigenLayer lets you “restake” your ETH or liquid staking tokens to help secure additional protocols (called AVSes — Actively Validated Services) in exchange for extra rewards. As of early 2026, EigenLayer holds over $19.7 billion TVL with more than 4.6 million ETH restaked.
Current EigenLayer restaking yield: 3.8% to 6% additional APY depending on which AVSes you choose (source: PistachioFi, April 2026). Higher yields come from newer or riskier AVSes.
The catch: most EigenLayer restaking requires you to hold your LST (like wstETH) directly — you can’t simultaneously have it in Aave as collateral and restaked on EigenLayer at the same time. It’s typically an either/or choice.
My approach: split ETH. 60% in the Lido + Aave leverage stack. 40% in EigenLayer restaking via the native restaking path. This gives me blended exposure to both strategies without over-concentrating.
Real Risks — The Honest Section
I lost $500 on a yield farming position in 2023. Not from this strategy, but from ignoring risks on a newer protocol. It’s not a fun lesson to learn. Here’s what to actually watch for.
Liquidation Risk
If ETH price drops sharply AND stETH depegs from ETH simultaneously, your health factor can deteriorate faster than expected. The Lido + Aave leverage position involves borrowing ETH against ETH-denominated collateral, so price movements largely cancel out. But a significant stETH/ETH depeg (stETH trading at a discount to ETH) creates a gap.
In March 2023, stETH briefly traded at a ~6% discount during the SVB banking crisis. Anyone running 3x+ leverage during that period would have seen their health factor drop dangerously. Plan for this scenario.
Mitigation: Keep health factor above 1.5 at minimum. Monitor the stETH/ETH ratio on DEX aggregators periodically. Set up health factor alerts through Aave’s notification system or DeFi Saver’s automation.
Smart Contract Risk
This strategy touches three protocols: Lido, Aave V3, and optionally EigenLayer. Each carries smart contract risk. Lido and Aave have extensive audit histories and years of live deployment. EigenLayer is newer and should be sized accordingly.
Never put funds you can’t afford to lose into any DeFi protocol, regardless of track record.
Variable Rate Risk on Borrowing
That 0.06% borrow rate can change. If borrowing demand for WETH spikes (for example, during a market surge when traders want leverage), the variable rate could rise significantly. At 3% borrow rate, the math on 2x leverage looks like:
(1.9 × 2.5%) − (0.9 × 3%) = 4.75% − 2.7% = 2.05% net
Still positive, but the edge disappears. Monitor borrow rates. Consider switching to stable-rate borrowing if variable rates spike.
Governance Changes
Aave and Lido are DAO-governed. LTV ratios, risk parameters, and supported assets can change through governance votes. What works today may change next quarter.
Who This Strategy Is For
Passive income isn’t lazy money — it’s smart money. But smart money requires setup time and ongoing attention.
This strategy makes sense if you:
- Already hold ETH long-term and aren’t planning to sell
- Understand basic DeFi mechanics (wallets, gas fees, protocol interfaces)
- Can monitor health factors at least weekly
- Are comfortable with the smart contract risks of Lido and Aave
It doesn’t make sense if you:
- Need the capital to be accessible immediately at all times
- Are new to DeFi and haven’t used a lending protocol before
- Have a small ETH position where gas fees eat a meaningful percentage
The gas cost to set up this strategy (staking + depositing + borrowing + looping) runs $30–80 in current conditions. On a $1,000 ETH position, that’s a significant drag. This strategy shines on positions of $5,000+ where fixed setup costs become negligible over a year.
FAQ
Does stETH keep earning staking rewards while sitting in Aave? Yes. wstETH in Aave continues appreciating relative to ETH at the staking rate. The Aave supply APY displayed (<0.01%) only reflects what Aave itself pays on top — Lido’s staking rewards are embedded in the wstETH price appreciation.
What happens if I get liquidated? Aave liquidators will sell a portion of your wstETH collateral to repay the WETH debt. You’ll pay a liquidation penalty (typically 5–10%) on the liquidated amount. This is why maintaining a healthy health factor matters.
Can I do this with a small amount of ETH? Technically yes, but gas fees make it uneconomical below $2,000–$3,000. For smaller amounts, basic Lido staking (Layer 1 only) is more sensible until you accumulate enough to make the strategy worthwhile.
Is this available on Layer 2s? Aave V3 runs on Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. Lido operates on some of these chains too. The rates and LTV ratios differ by chain, and the Prime (Lido) instance optimized for this specific strategy is on Ethereum mainnet as of April 2026.
What about taxes? Borrowing against collateral is not a taxable event in most jurisdictions. But staking rewards are typically taxable as income when received. Consult a crypto-specific tax professional. I use CoinLedger to track my DeFi positions — it handles Aave and Lido activity automatically.
Summary: Is It Worth It?
At 2x leverage, this strategy takes a 2.5% base yield to roughly 4.7%. At 3x, you’re in the 6–7% range. For someone holding ETH long-term anyway, the incremental work — a few transactions on setup and weekly health factor monitoring — seems worth that doubling or tripling of yield.
The strategy has been running in my portfolio since mid-2025. The Aave Prime instance in particular reduced the friction of looping significantly compared to the original setup. Borrowing costs at 0.06% make the math compelling even at conservative leverage ratios.
If you’re starting from zero, my suggested path:
- Buy ETH on Binance or OKX
- Transfer to self-custody wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, or hardware wallet)
- Stake on Lido → receive wstETH (Layer 1, 2.5% APY)
- Evaluate your risk tolerance before adding Aave leverage (Layer 2)
- Consider EigenLayer restaking with a portion once comfortable with Layers 1+2
