My spreadsheet has three tabs. “Conservative.” “Moderate.” And one labeled, without irony, “Why Did I Do That.”
That third tab was born in late 2024 in a rented house in Canggu, when I was 78% LTV against wstETH in a falling market. I had a coffee, the sunrise, and a Aave health factor of 1.04. Nothing focuses the mind like watching that number approach 1.0 in real time.
The lesson wasn’t “avoid DeFi.” It was “understand what you’re actually building.”
In July 2026, with a much calmer setup, my ETH is earning approximately 6% effective APY by combining two protocols that have been running without catastrophic failure since 2020 and 2017 respectively. Here’s the actual structure — and the math that explains why the number isn’t just 3.5% plus 3.5%.
Why “Stacking” Isn’t Just Addition
The most common misconception about DeFi yield layering: “If Protocol A pays 3.5% and Protocol B pays 3-4%, I earn 6-7%.”
Sometimes that’s true. Sometimes it’s circular. Sometimes it costs you the spread.
The Lido + Aave combination works because the two yields are sourced from different economic activities:

Lido staking yield comes from Ethereum validator rewards — ETH network issuance and MEV tips paid to validators for processing transactions. This yield doesn’t care what you do with your wstETH afterward. It compounds regardless of where the token sits.

Aave yields come from lending markets — borrowers paying interest to access capital. USDC supplied to Aave earns yield from people borrowing USDC, not from anything Lido is doing.
When you supply wstETH to Aave and borrow USDC to supply back, you’re earning two separate income streams from two separate economic engines. The compounding works because wstETH continues accumulating staking rewards whether it’s in your wallet or posted as Aave collateral.
That’s the insight. The rest is execution.
Three Layers — Pick Your Risk Tier
Layer 1: Lido Only (~3.5% APY)
Stake ETH on lido.fi. Receive wstETH. Done.
Current yield: approximately 3.5% APY as of July 9, 2026 (APY fluctuates — Lido publishes a 30-day moving average on their dashboard). This is up from roughly 2.5% in early April 2026, driven by increased Ethereum network activity and improved MEV capture post-Dencun upgrade.
On $1,000: earns approximately $35/year, or $2.90/month.
Liquidation risk: zero. You hold wstETH. It appreciates against ETH. No borrowing, no leverage.
This is where most ETH holders should start. If you’re holding ETH for 6-12+ months, not having it in Lido means leaving $35–$70 per $1,000 on the floor every year.
Layer 2: Lido + Aave Supply, No Borrow (~4–4.5% APY)
After staking, supply your wstETH directly to Aave V3 on Ethereum mainnet.
What you earn:
- Lido staking rewards continue (wstETH appreciates in ETH value): ~3.5%
- Aave supply rate on wstETH: approximately 0.5–1.5% additional APY (variable — source: Aave V3 dashboard, July 2026, APY fluctuates)
Combined: ~4–4.5% effective APY without any borrowing.
Your wstETH is now doing double duty — earning staking rewards from Lido while simultaneously earning Aave supply incentives. The Aave supply rate is lower than wstETH’s staking yield, but it’s additive and risk is still minimal (no liquidation possible without borrowing).
You do introduce one new risk: Aave smart contract risk. Lido and Aave each have bug bounty programs and multiple independent audits, but no protocol is immune to zero-day exploits. For how I size positions around this, see DeFi position sizing and risk management.
Layer 3: The Borrow Loop (~5–7% APY, Active Monitoring Required)
This is where the headline number comes from. The mechanism:
- Supply wstETH to Aave as collateral
- Borrow USDC at 50% LTV (never higher without a dedicated alert system)
- Supply borrowed USDC back to Aave at the USDC supply rate
On $1,000 of wstETH at current rates (all APY figures as of July 9, 2026 — APY fluctuates):

The “6–7%” you see advertised isn’t magic. It’s the combination of three rate streams minus one borrow cost — and it only works when the spread between USDC supply rate and borrow rate is positive. Right now it is. That can change.
Borrowing rates spiked above 15% briefly during the USDC depeg scare in 2023. The borrow loop became deeply unprofitable for two weeks. If you’re in Layer 3 and this happens, you can repay your USDC debt and revert to Layer 2 immediately.

Starting From $1,000 in July 2026
What you need:
- ETH — purchase via Binance (best liquidity on ETH/USD) or Bybit
- MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, or hardware wallet connected to Ethereum mainnet
- ~0.005 ETH reserved for gas ($15–20 at current prices, July 2026)
Step 1: Go to lido.fi → Connect wallet → Stake ETH → You receive wstETH. Check that the received amount matches the current wstETH/ETH ratio displayed on-screen.
Step 2: Go to app.aave.com → Switch to Ethereum mainnet → Click “Supply” → Select wstETH → Enter amount → Confirm transaction.
If stopping here (Layer 2): Done. Monitor monthly.
Step 3 (Layer 3 only): On Aave dashboard → Click “Borrow” → Select USDC → Set amount to 50% of your collateral value or less — the dashboard shows this as max borrowable; borrow half of that. Confirm.
Step 4: Back on Aave supply screen → Supply your borrowed USDC → Confirm.
Weekly monitoring (Layer 3 required): Check your Aave Health Factor. It should stay above 1.5 at minimum. Below 1.3, consider partial repayment. Set a recurring calendar reminder. This is not optional.
What Changed Since April 2026
When I originally described the Lido + Aave mechanics in the stETH + Aave yield stacking guide from April, Lido’s rate was approximately 2.5%. The same strategy now generates materially better base yield at 3.5%, with the borrow loop benefits roughly unchanged.
DeFi TVL has held at approximately $47B through July 2026 (source: DeFiLlama, July 9, 2026). Stability at this level signals that the protocols handling the bulk of that capital — Aave, Lido, and their peers — have demonstrated resilience through the volatility that shook out the weaker protocols in 2024–2025.

The Confession That Belongs Here
I spent most of 2023 and 2024 chasing 15–25% APY. I found it — briefly — in protocols that paid high yields to attract TVL before collapsing. I have three “Why Did I Do That” case studies filed away on my laptop as permanent reminders.
The Lido + Aave setup was “boring” to me at the time. No token incentives, no novel mechanisms, no Discord server with a custom emoji for every validator tier.
Now it’s producing 5–6% on capital I can sleep with. Not because the number is high, but because I understand every component of it. The staking reward. The supply rate. The borrow spread. The health factor.
Understanding what you’re doing with your money is the actual alpha. The returns are a consequence.

Q: What if USDC borrow rates spike above the supply rate? Repay your USDC debt and exit the borrow position. You can do this at any time — leave wstETH supplied and earning staking yield until rates normalize. The borrow loop is optional and reversible.
